Building a Zero-Carbon Future Requires Cross-Sector Collaboration
Media Plays Role as "Translator" and "Connector"

Making Sustainability a Natural Way of Life

While global climate negotiations focus on macro policies and technological goals, a practical dialogue centered on "daily life scenarios" drew significant attention in the COP30 Blue Zone.

On the afternoon of November 18, at a UN side event in the COP30 Blue Zone co-organized by the China Chain Store & Franchise Association (CCFA) and the C Team, guest speakers systematically explored how to integrate climate action into public daily life and promote the implementation of sustainable retail and circular practices. Hu Wenjuan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of China Sustainability Tribune, was invited to speak, sharing the unique role of media in advancing sustainable consumption and production.

The side event, themed "Anchored in Daily Life Scenarios, Igniting New Momentum for Climate Action," showcased multi-level practices ranging from concept dissemination to consumption closed-loop, and from corporate innovation to community collaboration. In her address, Hu emphasized that the primary task of media is to build a bridge between professional content and public awareness. "Through graphics, videos, live streams, and other formats, we translate grand climate knowledge into tangible life scenarios," she explained. She introduced the "Carbon Neutrality Science Column" and the "Chatting Big and Small" live program launched by China Sustainability Tribune on its official social media platforms, both of which aim to inspire public carbon reduction actions through emotional engagement and scenario-based approaches, integrating the sustainability principles into everyone's daily life鈥攆rom clothing, food, housing, transportation to daily necessities.

To drive sustainable consumption from concept to practice, China Sustainability Tribune launched the Global Sustainable Consumption Initiative with leading enterprises and brands in 2021, committed to bridging the gap between production and consumption, and making sustainable consumption a tangible new consumption scenario. "We have organized events at the China International Consumer Products Expo for five consecutive years, not only fostering a business-for-good atmosphere but also facilitating closed-door discussions on challenges and submitting policy recommendations," Hu stressed. "Our goal is to make sustainable consumption an easy, default choice, rather than one reliant on moral persuasion."

To fully explore and promote corporate sustainability practices, China Sustainability Tribune launched "GoldenKey 鈥?SDG Solutions" in 2020, focusing on innovative solutions in areas such as climate action, rural vitalization, and quality education, etc. Sustainable consumption is also a key focus, nurturing many outstanding corporate practices that advance sustainable consumption and production. Hu noted that the GoldenKey platform is not only a mechanism for identification and selection but also a community for corporate learning and growth. "Through expert guidance, cross-sector collaboration, and partnerships, enterprises jointly build a sustainable development ecosystem."

At the event, a GoldenKey case implemented by State Grid Taizhou Huangyan Power Supply Company and State Grid Zhejiang Information & Communication Company鈥? Building a Climate-Resilient Flood Prevention Model for Community-Based Underground Distribution Rooms"鈥攚as highlighted as an exemplary corporate climate action practice. The case, presented via video, elaborated on the value of cross-sector collaboration in addressing climate change.

In response to increasingly frequent extreme weather events, State Grid Huangyan adopted an innovative model combining manual prevention, technological prevention and intelligent prevention to build climate resilience for 167 underground distribution rooms. The project achieved a 鈥減hysical hard barrier鈥漷hrough China鈥檚 first 10kV waterproof distribution equipment and leveraged an urban flood prevention radar system for precise early warnings and intelligent dispatch. This solution successfully increased flood prediction accuracy to 92.4%, achieving "zero flooding" during multiple typhoons and heavy rains, shifting from passive disaster response to proactive prevention. It provides a replicable resilience solution for power systems in coastal cities facing climate risks.

This case is included in the casebook, Golden Key: 2025 Climate Solutions from Chinese Enterprises, released on-site at COP30.
