Challenge
Wetlands — Earth’s “kidneys” — play an irreplaceable role in purifying water, regulating climate, and sustaining biodiversity. Yet worldwide, they face growing threats from human interference and ecological degradation.
Yunqiao Wetland sits alongside the Xuyan River, adjacent to Chengdu’s Water Plant No. 6 — the primary source supplying 80% of the city’s drinking water. This unique position makes Yunqiao’s ecological protection critical for millions of residents’ water safety. However, invasive plant species have spread rapidly, infrastructure remains inadequate, and public ecological awareness is insufficient — issues that have long undermined the wetland’s health and demand urgent collaborative action between business and community.
Solution
Intel’s “Cloud Bridge Wetland” conservation project embodies the company’s 2030 RISE strategy (Responsible, Inclusive, Sustainable, Enabling) in China, integrating corporate sustainability goals with employee volunteerism to advance wetland ecology alongside local communities.
Since 2012, Intel Chengdu volunteers have partnered with Kanghua Community Development Center for sustained wetland stewardship — biodiversity data collection, facility maintenance, and educational material development. Volunteers have removed approximately 5,000 kg of invasive species such as alligator weed and parrot feather, crafted over 100 wetland educational exhibits, and donated the “Xin-Yun Bridge” installation and conservation tools, significantly improving ecological restoration and public environmental education.
A systematic action framework underpins the project: regular employee-led wetland patrols and biodiversity monitoring building a species database; corporate culture incentives integrating volunteer service into performance recognition; and community partnerships with schools and local groups hosting environmental lectures to widen public engagement. This three-pronged approach ensures both continuity and scalability.

Ecological value
Years of sustained effort have effectively restored Yunqiao Wetland’s biodiversity and reduced invasive plant encroachment. Its water conveyance, storage, and supply functions are now more robust, directly safeguarding the ecological security of the water source serving 80% of Chengdu’s population — a vital pillar of the city’s ecosystem.
Social value
By 2020, 3,095 volunteers directly served at Yunqiao Wetland, accumulating roughly 14,141 hours. The project has catalyzed collective environmental action within the enterprise, offering a replicable model that integrates employee volunteerism with wetland conservation. As Wu Jiawei, Executive Director of Kanghua Community Development Center, noted: “The initiative mobilized grassroots workers, making the habitat better serve wildlife and all Chengdu residents.”
Strategic value
Intel pioneered the institutional integration of environmental targets with employee volunteerism, forming a “corporate goals — employee motivation — community collaboration” tripartite model that internalizes sustainability commitments. Yunqiao Wetland stands as a replicable benchmark for wetland construction, protection, and utilization elsewhere.
