Roadshow of 2025 GoldenKey·Power Sector Special: Global Responsibility

To effectively communicate the power sector's contributions to sustainable development and promote exemplary practices of power companies, the China Electricity Council (CEC), in collaboration with China Sustainability Tribune, launched the 2025 "Golden Key · Power Sector Special" campaign, calling for SDG solutions from electricity companies.

The 2025 "Golden Key · Power Sector Special" features four tracks: Rural Vitalization, Climate Action, Global Responsibility, and Innovative Transformation. Following preliminary evaluations, 80 solutions have been included into the roadshow round of the campaign. To further amplify the impact of these outstanding initiatives and guide all sectors of society in understanding, recognizing, and supporting the power sector, we here present the shortlisted entries to promote and highlight the exemplary practices.

Advancing Ecological and Biodiversity Conservation Innovation in Belt and Road Cooperation or Overseas Operation Projects

C01:  Powering Green Shipping in Belt and Road Regions

(Zhejiang Zheneng Technology and Environmental Protection Group Co., Ltd.)

The company has achieved certification from nine global ship classification societies for its green shipping solutions, completing over 1,000 vessel energy-saving projects that reduce SO₂ emissions by over 400,000 tons annually. Through its full-industry-chain model—spanning R&D, equipment manufacturing, global after-sale services, and EPC projects—the company drives environmental industry growth in Belt and Road countries through technology transfer and industrial cooperation. Each ship retrofit creates over 80 local jobs. Its efforts support the local environmental and economic progress.

C02: Tangguh Employment and SME Development in Indonesia (China Datang Overseas InvestmentCo., Ltd)

PMU Sinar Mas, a subsidiary of China Datang Overseas InvestmentCo., Ltd in Indonesia, empowers women-led businesses like “Transy Snack” through operational standardization, supports MSMEs with independent operation capabilities, and collaborates with universities to enhance seaweed farmers’ yields via technical training. Shifting from aid to the realization of sustainable self-development, the company has earned Indonesia’s five-star CSR award multiple times, establishing a good image for Chinese enterprises.

C03: Solar-Powered Clean Water Project in Kiribati Builds Sino-Pacific Ties (SPIC International Energy Co., Ltd.)

The company’s integrated solar-powered drinking water project addresses Kiribati’ urgent need for potable water. Using PV system and air moisture capture technology, the system supplies the country’s only general hospital with clean water, earning recognition from both governments and local communities as a model of China-Pacific Island energy cooperation.

C04: AI-Driven Textile Decarbonization for EU CBAM Compliance (ICT Branch and Shaoxing Power Supply Company of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

The two companies developed the “CarbonSeek” AI platform with partners to build an electricity-carbon analysis model and a tripartite green transition system (technology reform, business remodeling, policy mechanisms).  this platform also establishes a new paradigm for digital governance, implements AI carbon reduction, and provides a full-chain service for the green transformation and overseas expansion of the textile industry. This supports China’s largest textile dyeing cluster in reaching high-value, low-energy, and zero-carbon transformation while expanding overseas under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

C05: “Lighting Up Lives” Initiative Powers Sustainable Communities in Peru (China Southern Power Grid International Co., Ltd.)

The company’s subsidiary in Peru enhances secure, efficient, and clean power supply in northern Lima through its “Lighting Up Lives” initiative. The program focuses on three pillars: reliable energy access (“Lighting Lives”), educational support (“Brightening Futures”), and cultural value promotion (“Illuminating Civilization”). This community-driven model improves local quality of life while advancing green, healthy, and sustainable development.

C06: Revitalizing Rivers Through Four-Dimensional Ecological Management in Brazil (China Three Gorges International Limited)

The company, now Brazil’s third-largest power generator operating 14 hydropower plants, has implemented a comprehensive “four-dimensional” aquatic ecosystem management system. This approach includes breeding native fish, protecting endangered species, controlling invasive organisms, and intelligently managing aquatic vegetation. Integrating ecological conservation with hydropower operations, the model demonstrates China’s expertise in global sustainable hydropower practices.

C07: Bringing Clean Water and Power to the “Land of a Thousand Islands” (State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.)

With the core concept of "clean energy supply + universal water supply", the company customized a modular, renewable-energy-powered desalination microgrid system for the Maldives’ water scarcity challenges. Using a hybrid solar-wind-storage solution, this Sino-Maldives cooperation project not only provides clean water and electricity but also supports public health and ecological conservation, achieving localized sustainable development.

C08: Guardians of the Mangroves: Ecological Conservation in Indonesia (CHN Energy Indonesia Jawa Power Co.,Ltd)

The plant increased wild mangrove coverage from less than 5 hectares to 19 hectares through a dedicated conservation project. This effort not only restored biodiversity and improved the local ecosystem but also raised villagers’ income, showcasing Chinese enterprises’ commitment to sustainable development.

C09: Clean Energy and Friendship Along the Mekong (Sanhe II Hydropower Co.,Ltd)

The Sanhe II Hydropower Plant, a landmark China-Cambodia collaboration, significantly improves Cambodia’s energy mix. The project features Asia’s longest nature-like fish passage to protect biodiversity, successfully relocated 3,690 people with improved infrastructure, and supported livelihoods through technical and employment assistance—embodying the deepening friendship and sustainable development between the two countries.

C10: Building Pakistan’s HVDC Talent “National Team” (China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co.,Ltd)

The company established a full-cycle local talent development system for HVDC transmission ranging from hiring, training and development, aiming to nurturing professional engineers in Pakistan. This initiative filled a critical technical gap, created a highly skilled operations team, and secured stable operation of the Matiari-Lahore HVDC project, enabling a leap in the country’s power industry toward advanced transmission and low-carbon transition.

C11: Coral Reef Restoration for a Brighter Marine Future (China Huadian Engineering Co., Ltd.)

The company’s Bali power plant partnered with research institutions to implement coral reef conservation in Indonesia. The team has released 500 coral seedlings, restored 200 square meters of reef, and engaged 90 volunteers. Future plans include an underwater coral farm and scaling the restoration model across the country.

C12: Belo Monte UHVDC Project Drives Green Energy Transition in Brazil (State Grid International Development Co., Ltd.)

The company’s Belo Monte ±800kV UHVDC project—the Americas’ highest-voltage and most technologically advanced transmission system—marks Brazil’s entry into the UHVDC era. The project embodies the concept that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” introducing sustainability expertise to Brazil and serving as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector.
